The Trust is named after a legal luminary of Karachi, S.M.Sohail, who was an active participant in the freedom movement as President of provincial Muslim League and also President of Bihar Relief Fund. After 1947, he became Secretary of Pakistan Bar Council, founding Managing Director of Karachi Co-operative Housing Union, and Chairman Public Accounts Committee of West Pakistan Assembly. He was an ardent advocate of education and founded Sharfabad English School.
In 1997, the Trust established the School of Nursing at Medicare Hospital. The School has admitted its fifth batch of students. The Medicare School of Nursing students have consistently shown good results in Board examinations.
In 1998, the Trust established Jinnah Medical College, which is now admitting its fourth batch of MBBS students. In 1999, the Dental Section was established and is admitting its third batch of BDS students.
The Trust has also acquired land in a katchi abadi in Landhi where a primary health care center is being constructed. Its location is ideal for a PHC unit from which out-reach services will spread into the community. This will provide a firm basis for community health activities since community oriented medical education (COME) is an important part of the Trust's mission statement.
At present, the Trust is offering 46 scholarships to medical students and provides stipends, uniforms and tuition for 100 nursing students. These scholarships are given to meritorious deserving candidates.
